 Roman Signer at Aargauer Kunsthaus
Street Views and Super 8 Films
28 Jan 2012 – 22 Apr 2012
The first part of the exhibition shows Roman Signer’s series of photographs titled Strassenbilder (Street Views), which were taken during extensive travels in the Carpathians, the Ukraine and Romania. The Aargauer Kunsthaus acquired this important work in 2011. 24 photographs show lovingly decorated memorials that were created to commemorate road casualties. An additional 24 pictures show small stalls selling all kinds of comestibles. A visual dialogue on life and death at the roadside evolves between the two subjects. Presented in the second section are large-scale projections of 36 super 8 films, which Signer created during the period from 1975 until 1989. Adding up to a monumental mise-en-scène, these films offer a surprisingly unfamiliar, self-reflective look at the art of Roman Signer, while contrasting both thematically and formally with his series of street views.
